Our First Preschool Tour: First Years Venice

After attending the Parents Education League Pre-School Fair on October 11th, Prescott & I decided to schedule a tour at First Years Preschool in Venice.  The "tour" was about an hour long.  We listened to the director discuss the school's philosophy and the various programs, and we got to see the "Bears" (ten kids aged 2 1/2 to 3 1/2) and the "Penguins" (sixteen kids aged 3 1/2 to 5) in action both in the "classroom" and on the playground.  The next step - submitting an application to the Toddler Program, which Kira & I would start in September 2012.

"Oh, s#!t!"

She figured out the dog door.  It doesn't get any easier, does it?

UCLA Language Lab

Here is a description of the study: In the listening task, Kira was seated on my lap in front of a TV monitor at a distance of about 3 feet on which various displays were presented.  First, Kira’s attention was drawn to the screen with a visual display (e.g. a flashing red light).  Once she was watching the TV monitor, a visual display (e.g. a picture of a boy with five balloons) was presented on the video monitor accompanied by audio speech stimuli (e.g. Look, he has balloons!).  A video camera recorded Kira’s face to determine how much time her gaze was fixated on combinations of video and audio displays.  All Kira needed to do was listen to the sounds while watching the display on the TV monitor.  These looking time measures provide information about children’s sensitivity to speech stimuli.*
